The nepotism in New Orleans is like nothing you'll see anywhere else. There are people who have jobs that are doing very well and couldn't survive anywhere else outside, ever. People who barely passed high school just passed up the Ivy League grad for that job becase they were Auntie Lou's great great grandbaby. It's not right, but that's how it can be. With the economy, it makes this action much more outstanding and it sucks. No guns, just find someone to trust in you like family. The only reason I got my job here was that I was transferring within a company; same with my husband. I'm spending my grad school years networking (socializing) with people in my industry just so I can find a job. I got downsized in my last job. My husband's job isn't going anywhere as long as the Mississippi's flowing, so I'm here for awhile.

Finally I went for my orientation at the job, turns out the job isn't definite, it basically depends on whether the managers like the look of me. I have been waiting all week to hear back from them, finally got in touch with HR, got told a decision hasn't been made yet and I'll know next week. This is just unbelievable. And at the same time I got an email from a major bank I'd applied for a teller position with. 2 MONTHS AGO. In fact I got 2 emails, both rejections, each with a contradictory story, from the same address. "After careful consideration..." Careful consideration that takes 2 months? NOLA takes the flipping cake. I'm almost out of here.

this is all very interesting, cos i m starting to think... is there something wrong with me? everywhere we lived, i had no problem finding a job within days/ a week ( i m in medical field).. I feel its a game here or something...
one job i found ... they told me they need me badly, told me to wait 2 more weeks for a second interview, then they forgot to call, then I called them again to see if they are still interested, oh yes they were and they were just about to call me .. okay then great.. .now they told me to wait a bit longer , cos they definetely want me... and ... they never call ... lol... i think this is just ridiculous...

'They' definitely have their own way of doing things here and whilst that's perfectly normal, it leaves new migrants feeling utterly frustrated and reinforces the notion that there's a closed club of 'us' and 'them'. It reminds me of the year I spent teaching English in Korea. It seemed they made things deliberately difficult for foreigners, and its difficult to say whether they actually did or not because it's so easy to get paranoid. What I learned there, and what I've learned to do here, is pick my battles and put my foot down when it is absolutely necessary, and things will get done. I had to go back repeatedly to my employers to let them know how serious I was about the job and then finally I got welcomed into the fold. Now I'm a full-time employee. I also had to put my foot down recently over air-con in my apartment, because I knew if I didn't the maintenance person wouldn't get around to replacing it for a month and I needed it immediately to ensure I didn't lose sleep and jeopardize my new job. I don't know whether they thought I was a horses ass for being so demanding (I threatened to move out) but it was fairly out of character for me as I am usually laid-back (bitchy posts on this website notwithstanding) and they replaced the a/c for me that day. I don't care if NOLA does business the slow way, it will not do if it is going to jeopardize my living and my job, and at selective times I think you have to let the people here know that it will not do. They themselves would do the same thing, I am sure.

I have applied to another job and had my first orientation on Friday... They told me the paperwork process will take approximately 30 days... and yes they do need me badly as well, as there s a shortage of professionals like me and a great need for the community... .. we ll see.... its just 30 days...
hope i ll get something by Xmas ...
