Greetings!

I will be in New Orleans for both French Quarter AND Jazz Fests (lucky me!). Inbetween festivals we may call for cab service from our room (the Marigny) to go to areas outside The Quarter.

Are there cab services that you recommend? Some I should avoid? Any pointers?

Thank you all very much.

Yellow Cab has always been good but I think all listed in the yellow pages are. There are shuttle buses that run from the Quarter bars/hotels to the Jazz Fest.

Have to second the Yellow Cab suggestion. When I was visiting NO, I stayed at the Holiday Inn superdome and found this cabbie who was really friendly. I ended up using his service to transport me in and around the city during my stay. It was just sheer luck finding him, but I am thankful that I did.

When you find a cabbie you like, you can ask for his card and call him specifically when you need a cab.

Yup, that's what I did, he was very kind enough to give me his number and I plan on using his services when I move to NOLA in June at least initially.

Thank you all for your great input. Yellow Cab it is.

I'll share a funny story (although it wasn't funny at the time). When we flew to N.O. two years ago we took a cab driven by a Haitian girl and she was so petite that we had to place our own luggage in the back. She did fine at the wheel until we got to the French Quarter and that's where things got interesting. We were staying in the Marigny and she didn't know that Dauphine crosses over Esplanade. Her English was minimal and my husband got so frustrated trying to explain how to get there. I began to wonder if we'd ever get to our room. But we did, and she learned more about Dauphine Street.

Once a taxi driver put us out on the corner, half a block from our hotel, in the rain. He also drove around a road closed barrier and the wrong way down a one way street in the French Quarter. We didn't mind getting wet. We were glad to get out alive.

Holy cow!

And what gets me about this, and my experience, is that SURELY there were better-abled people to drive these taxis! Especially post-Katrina when people were in need of jobs.
