What cautions do any of you have for a lone male photographing the neighborhoods of the Marigny, Bywater, Bayou St. John, etc. during the day? I'm interested in photographing the homes, as well as trying to get a feel of what it is like to live here. Are their any precautions or areas any of you would feel I should avoid. I will have a bicycle, my camera (tripod) and cell phone. Would you say people in these areas would have a problem with someone photographing there? I have shot throughout the midwest in large cities and small times in working-class neighborhoods, and have rarely ever had any problems. I have had many great conversations with locals about their neighborhoods, but would think that New Orleans might be a bit over exposed lately. What does anyone think? Thanks.

Won't hurt to knock on the door and explain why you want to photograph their house. Might even get you a peek inside.

People in New Orleans are used to it. It shouldn't be a problem at all, unless you just happen upon someone having a bad day.
