I think of New Orleans as Southwestern just as much as I'd think El Paso to be the deep south.

I vote for Mud Coast.

And to the OP, what a strange question. If by Southwestern, you mean desert-like and strongly Mexican influenced, then no. No, New Orleans isn't the least bit Southwestern. Outside the French Quarter, New Orleans is classically Southern. The French Quarter is classically Latinate colonial styled (the French are as Latin as the Spanish), but that's where the similarities between New Orleans and Albequerque end.

ACTUALLY, geographically Miami is closer to Cuba and the carribean, then it is to the Georgia border. So technically........

It depends wha part of Houston. Houston as a WHOLE is a REALLY cosmopolitan southern city, BUT there aare PARTS that architecturally are more akin to San Antonio. Remeber there were even Spanish missions in EAST TEXAS also. But Houston is a southern city through and through.

New Orleans is southern through and through, there is NOTHING southwest about it. The western-most southern city is probably somewhere directly east of central Texas. Or MAYBE it's Austin. But if it's Austin, then Austin is the LEAST most "Southern" southern city.

New Orleans is definitely Southern with Cajun & Creole ethnicity, plus there's nothing southwestern about it. If New Orleans is part southwestern then I guess that means Minneapolis is part the Pacific Northwest lol

Dumb question. New Orleans is Southern to the bone. You have to go to Houston to find even a hint of Southwestern culture.

If NO is Southwestern, then Texas is California. And surprisingly, living here on the east-coast, to alot of people, Texas might as well be California. It's always seen as that state "Out there". To alot of people out here they view Texas in the context of "It's far, it's west of here, it's just out there". Even a state like Mississippi or Louisiana, which are also in the Western South, won't be viewed with the same "Out there-ness" as Texas is, by folks out here.

I think alot of people are saying that New Orleans is "southern" just as an "other" option. Because N.O. is clearly not Southwestern, but anyone who knows this city also knows its not really "southern" either. While geographically, of course, its furthest south.

So as one of the few New Orleanians on this site, let me be clear: New Orleans is neither Southwestern, nor truly Southern. Period.
