Yes, another of these posts...I'm starting a job at Xavier in August, probably moving in late July/early August. I am relatively young and single, but not a "night life" person, so I would rather not live near that scene. On the other hand, I hate commutes. Due to unusual financial situations, I won't be able to spend more than $800/month on rent for the first year. Preferably I would live in a large 1/br or small 2/br. I also have a small dog that will be coming with me. Finally, I am completely useless when it comes to home repairs, so doing the "fix it up while you live here" thing wouldn't work. If anyone has any suggestions on where to start looking, I would deeply appreciate it. Also, if someone could give general suggestions on better/worse places near Xavier that would be great. Thanks!

A lot of areas near Xavier had flood damage from Katrina. The best thing to do is call the University and see what they recommend. I would also go see for yourself, you might find some areas better than others. I know people that used to live on Octavia St. not too far away, they did have about 6-8 ft of water though. Good luck!

Young and Single...stick to Metairie, you may have to make some sacrifices to pay rent because of the huge demand for undamaged apartments, but it can be done. Check out Moderator cut: advertising for apartments in Metairie.

Default Xavier

My mom used to work at Xavier. They live near Claiborn and Jefferson, and had about 2-3 feet of water there. My brother lived on Green St, a few blocks off Carrolton. They only had water in the street. There also were a lot of rentals in his neighborhood. It was near the cemetary there, also near Tulane University. Public transportation is/was really good there.
