Some of my Mother's family are New Orleans Italians . I heard stories of various Uncles that worked for Mafia owned businesses . One of them worked for Carlos Marcello back in the old days . They were all small time though .

Yeppers when the mob ran NOLA it was the king city of the South. NOLA has a great futre ahead of iot just hire some goodfellows to get rid of the thugs.

Yeah, theys got I-talians. Nothing like the Northeast though. My guess is Mid-City used to be the real Italian neighborhood (judging from the old-world Italian restaurants there like Venezia, as well as Italian-run New Orleans joints like Liuzza's or Mandina's. But they Italian population here has scattered to the wind (and the 'burbs) so it becomes most obvious through festivals.
