Yeah, just save up. And if you want to avoid DMV lines you can get a license plates from most Wal-Marts in the area, many insurance offices, plate stores, title offices, etc. You'll have to go to a DMV for you drivers license though.

Good god, $4k ?!?! What do you drive ? Mazarati ? They told me my registration would be under $100 in LA which is about the going rate in TN.

You have to pay 9% of the retail value at registration. You have to pay 9% of the sticker price if the car is brand new.

Example: so if you have buy a car for $20,000 you end up paying $1800 + every other fee they tack on.

Every other year after that it's $20+.

I'm new to LA but when I bought my truck in TN they added the tax, title, and license to my loan, I didn't have to pay anything.

I was told by a DMV person that If I showed I paid tax on the truck in TN that I would only be charged 4% of the vehichles worth which, blue book has been very bad to me so I dunno.. They said they had some kind of reciprocal agreement where you only have to pay 4%

Either way, LA is irritating when it comes to the DMV and public records.

But it's better than Miss and UT, where they tax you on the value of the car every year. The actual amount declines with the value of the car, but still it's a burden.
