i am planning on being in new orleans over labor day this weekend and just saw that southern decadence is taking place.

does this event take over the city or will it be relatively normal conditions on frenchman street and in the garden district?

Frenchman & The garden district should be ok The Gay population usually doubles or tripples for Labor Day weekend. There will probably be a lot of gays walking or staying at hotels in the Garden district and checking out the clubs on Frenchman but no need to worry. Most of the Action for Southern Decadence is pretty much confined to the area of the quarter where all the Gay bars are. There is a parade but its a walking parade on Sunday, it starts on Royal near the Golden Lantarn and no one knows the route it stays confined to the French Quarter.
