I would like to attend the Mardi Gras in 2010 for my 40th B-Day! It looks like it's going to be Feb. 13th thru 16th. My question is...if the main event is on Tuesday the 16th what is there to do during the weekend which will be the days I will be able to attend???? Thanks for any suggestions!

The main event is not even really Tuesday as such. Personally I prefer the weekend parades (and there are several). There are parades every weekend for a month or so leading up to Mardi Gras and then the week right before Mardi Gras, there are several awesome parades and a huge party atmosphere all week especially from Thursday through to Mardi Gras day itself. My favorite day is actually Lundi Gras which is awesome to spend on the Riverwalk downtown. Don't worry its not about not having anything to do, the best parts are the days leading up to Mardi Gras itself.

I work in the hotel industry and can tell you that most of the people that visit for Mardi Gras leave before Fat Tuesday anyway. Every year we are sold out for Friday & Saturday night, about 65-70% on Sunday (many people stay for Bacchus) and 50% or less for Tuesday. The best parades run Saturday night (Endymion, the largest parade), Sunday night (Bacchus, the 2nd largest), and Monday night (Orpheus).

If you need any hotel recommendations let me know.

Have fun, but don't say "the Mardi Gras." Say, "Mardi Gras." It would be like saying "the Christmas" (Paul Simon's song lyrics not withstanding).

The next Mardi Gras in my birthday as well. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not.

Pity you can't stay a bit longer nholloway...it's also amazing to see NOLA settle down after Fat Tuesday. The place is amazing, she'll get her hooks into you no matter how briefly you stay. You're gonna have the best 40th, and I bet it won't be your last visit!

On the Sunday afternoon, be sure not to miss the Mid City Parade...one of da best!

It's an Uptown parade (partially along St Charles) and they feature the "Battle of the Bands"...some of the Nation's best marching bands playing and marching to their tip-top standards; Military, College and High school bands galore. They come for all over to be in this one.

This parade was always a favorite of locals and you can ask any New Orleanian...we sure do know from par-rades and we don't get impressed too easily!
