Isn't Lusher a charter school? I'm not sure how good their test scores were last year.

It s a charter school. The feedback i m getting is that it is diverse, great parental involvement, good atmosphere... as if it is a social club...
I was just curious about their teaching philosophy, scores, etc.. cant really find it online..

I will vouch for Lusher. It has three different sites (elementary, middle, high school) across the Uptown area. I attended St. George's for elementary school, and let me tell you something, the expensive price tag didn't automatically make a good school. Maybe we were a fluke year but the class I graduated with had some serious problems, and I was in mostly honors classes and was sorely unprepared for high school. I know it's cliche but "more money more problems" was pretty much the best way to sum up the people with whom I attended elementary school. In contrast, Lusher costs maybe $50 a year in fees, and is one of the only schools that truly transcends racial, cultural, and economic lines. Lusher's high school campus is seriously nice, it was acquired after Katrina and Drew Brees donated the money to construct a brand new stadium. If you can get your kids into Lusher it will be well worth it, and makes much more sense than paying $5-$7K for a Catholic school or $8-$15K for a private school. I don't think that the environment is any less fostering at Lusher than the expensive schools either. The only real difference, in my opinion, is that kids aren't "babied" as much as private schools. The school board is paying for them to go there, rather than the students paying, so don't expect as many 2nd, 3rd and 4th chances. To me that's simple accountability. Hope that helped.

If she's smart, then the best thing to do is send her to a magnet school. There are many in Louisiana and they all provide educations equal to (or better!) than many of the private schools listed. If you are planning on sending her to college, then I higly recommend a sending her to a magnet school because those are the schools college scouts look at first. All in all, they are by far the best because they provide an excellent education without you having to spend a fortune (since most private schools in Louisiana cost at least $8,000 a year.) I hope you find the right school!

I see this is a very old thread but I was wondering if the previous answers still apply. My husband just interviewed for a job in New Orleans. We might be moving there this summer. Our son is 4 y/o so he will initially attend pre-k somewhere but I need to plan ahead for his elementary school needs. While we obviously have not yet bought a house, I was leaning toward the English Turn community in the West Bank area. The homes look nice and the area seems safe with little to no crime as it is gated.

Are there any good private schools somewhat near there?

Thanks so much for your time!
