Correct New Orleans accents in The Princess & The Frog (neighborhood, college)

Those of you who've seen The Princess and The Frog, do you agree with Ray Nagin saying they've got the accents correct?

I doubt anybody knows how exactly the people in New Orleans spoke in 1920's, but perhaps some of you can still remember your grandparents' accents.

And I hate the fact that they dub the movie here.
Most of the nuances for which the accents play an important role are lost.

Interesting question! Years ago, I had a professor who was born and raised in New Orleans. I remember him telling us that accents actually varied neighborhood by neighborhood within the city. He was from a place called "Irish Village" (not it, but something like that) and said the people there spoke with an accent very similar to Brooklyn's.

Even in the late 1950s, when I went to college there and stayed, you could tell where someone lived by the acent. Yats, Frats, Da PArish, as we referred to them. Then there were the nuances between more or less educated people in the same area.

One of New Orleans' many charms! Everything is so local, practically right down to the block! I suspect that has fallen apart somewhat in recent years, tho. Still, by far, NOLA is the South's least homogenous cities, by far.

I got current Brooklyn friends that have that a similar accents to that of New Orleans. This difference is the southern drawl. People up north tend to talk faster than we do

I always thought of it as Brooklyn style plus y'all (not you guys or yous)

My Mothers family is from New Orleans . I well remember the accents all right . And some of them did talk fast . No southern drawl there .
