Alabama's current governor, Bob Riley, is on a big push to establish Charter Schools in our state. One of the points of the nay-sayers is that charter schools hire people that are not certified teachers and many that are not even degree holders. I know that New Orleans has many established charter schools and I would liike to hear input about how they are working out versus public schools. Also please address the point of non-certified techers. Is this common in your charter schools?

I'm not from La, but will be moving there soon. I am, however, a charter school teacher. ALL the teachers are fully certified, with 70% holding advanced degrees.

I just didn't see hiring teachers without certification, but you just never know these days. Here in Alabama, I know many high dollar/high performing private schools who have noncertified teachers on staff.

What state are you currently in, if you don't mind my asking?

Michigan. Private schools can hire non-certified teachers because they don't receive federal dollars.
