Algiers independence bid from New Orleans gains House approval | NOLA.com

I think this is a silly idea that has even made it this far.

They feel they are neglected from city services. Every part of this city has some form of neglect, doesnt mean every neighborhood in the city should try to divorce new orleans and start their own little city. I have potholes in my neighborhood in the east, but im not trying to sign a petition to break away from the city....we're stronger together than apart.

I don't have any skin in the game except I've spent a fair amount of time in LA, and I love her. So here's the deal. The legislature can pass all the feel-good legislation they want. But. Before Algiers/Algiers Point can incorporate and join others to form a new ??? the question must be placed on a general ballot for vote. The proponents can jump for joy and celebrate now, but it might be a tad too early.

Even if Algiers is prepared and meets all the requirements now. . . It could be a year or longer before the question comes before the voters who actually care.

I'd be SHOCKED if this happens, and as sconley stated we're stronger together than apart. Also, if there was a vote I doubt that the residents would overwhelmingly vote in favor of this which would need to happen for Algiers to secede.
