We will be driving to New Orleans the end of September from SC to attend my nephews wedding. I think we will stay in Montgomery AL each way to break up the drive.

You should be able to find a spot in the Quarter, more so if you get in early in the afternoon. I might not be as close to those hotels as you like, but i'm always able to find a few spots towards Esplanade.

India House Hostel! It's honestly not that far from the Quarter and you'll save boatloads of money. Not sure if you're the type who can stay in a hostel though.

It depends on your expectations, but I would place convenient access to the wedding venues at the top of my priorities. A well-traveled Parisian couple I know stay at the Villa Convento on Ursulines Ave. in the FQ and they find it quite nice for the price and location. But then they're French...

Yes hotels on St. Charles. Just got back from the Memorial weekend and I must say I just can't get enough of New Orleans. We stayed at the Intercontinental on St. Charles. Yes free parking lol!!
