I want to bring some of the crude oil from the spill that's destroying our coastline, back to Boston. My plan is to make a large colorful tranquil beautiful painting of a Louisiana marsh with a stunning pelican looking out at the viewer. I would paint over this peaceful lovely scene with this nasty disgusting oil to cover the lower half of the painting of the marsh including the pelican, leaving an upper portion pristine and natural under a stunning blue sky. I am hoping to bring this disaster up close and personal. I want people to see and smell the oil touch it if they dare and understand what havic it can bring.
People will have many interpretations, I believe, but the one I want them to take away is that we are all, without exception are responsible. We use alot of oil in this country and my hope is in this very small way it will make us think in terms of using less. And even though it may not have any affect I feel I must do it any way. And now after having said that, I need help getting some oil to make this painting. Do you have any suggestions? I will come, in about a week, and I would love to have a contact there who can help me retrieve some oil from the spill. Thank you for reading this. Roger Johnson

If you can't get a hold of some, I'd try used motor oil, black, thick, smells terrible!

That's the cool part about art, you're representing and telling, not recreating exactly! Be creative with it!

That stuff is toxic, don't you read the news? It gives off fumes as well as it can be absorbed through the skin.

"Tar balls" are washing up on the beaches from Mississippi to Florida but, from what I know, the Louisiana coastline is closed to visitors. We only have one actual beach, though (Grand Isle is definitely closed). I respect your art and the point you're trying to get across (love to see it), but I also think it would be better if it didn't smell or make you sick while you're painting it.

Thanks UKU motor oil wont do it. I want to bring people closer to the spill. Yes it is nasty stuff. but it has to be that oil..
Thanks for comment about being "creative". It is a very broad subject and as I am sure you know can mean many things. To me it in this case my intention is that what I am presenting engages some one to think about who they are and what they are doing in a deeper way that makes them a different person hopefully to their betterment and the world around them.

Yes,I read the news. I know it is toxic. But setting in front of our TV won't do it. If that oil was sloshing up right now at your front door and oozzing into your front hall you would be a lot more impressed. I dont want to hurt anybody. I just want for us to entertain the idea that we should be using less. In this case oil. Maybe if viewers would have to put on protective clothes and wear masks(not a bad idea) they might have a better sense for example of what driving 80 miles an hour in a gas guzzler can do to the environment. Am I off base?

Really, the oil spill is about driving 80 miles an hour in a gas guzzler can do to the environment.:sm ack::sma ck:

I would say that you're off base by a mile.

Here's an idea, why not put blame where it goes instead of trying to make a personal agenda case about it?

Thanks POOK77. The information you mentioned is very usefull. Since beaches are closed I may have to work with those that have access like a small boat or beach cleaner. I only need a small amount of oil. A quart would door less. Do you know such people?
Yes I will have to be careful. Thanks for your concern.

Thanks Busta, but where in your opinion does the blame go? I am saying that we are all are responsible in thousands of ways and driving 80mph in a gas guzzler is just one example. Do you think that this example is not connected in some way to our misuse of great quantities of oil and the extreme effort we are taking to get it.

I don't know, maybe partly MMS's fault and all of BP's fault.

"In response to a U.S. senator's questions in a letter (http://media.nola.com/2010_gulf_oil_spillother/grassley-letter-to-BP.pdf - broken link), BP said it never follows a federal law requiring it to certify that a blowout preventer device would be able to block a well in case of an emergency. The inquiry stemmed from a hearing in May into the Gulf oil spill from the explosion and fire which sank the Deepwater Horizon rig.
y Hamburg/The Associated PressSen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, sent a letter to BP in May demanding answers and was dismayed Thursday by the response.
But, at the same time, the British oil giant blamed the federal oversight agency, Minerals Management Service, for not asking it to comply with the law."
