No, that's how you and what you know roll. Plenty of other RS/RC renters "had a chance" and used it to their advantage. One such tenant's case even made it to SCOTUS. https://gothamist.com/news/supreme-c...ilization-case

Walk around GV, WV, Chelsea, UES, UWS, and other areas any Thursday or Friday night and you'll find plenty of rent controlled tenants packing up to head out to their second homes in country.

Know personally a dozen or more seniors in Yorkville who own homes in PA, NJ, upstate NY; all paid off by now and still while keeping their (well below market rent) RS apartment.

Have you ever been to Brooklyn or Queens?? Forget about the Bronx

You NYC train of thought is so linear at times.....all you know is Manhattan and Staten Island.......

What makes you qualified to speak on this whole thing anyway? You know 2 boroughs, thats it.....

It is amusing to watch people squabble over 'enlightened' socialist slavery. You'd think they were back in 1850s, where folks were quite aware of the consequences of TAKING from one to GIVE to another.

Voluntary charity is a blessing.
Compulsory charity is a curse.

Any idiot who thinks their tax dollars are going to poor people needs to learn to read, or at least up their comprehension. You're paying more taxes because rich people and corporations aren't paying any. The difference has to come from somewhere. Check out the subsidized housing amount - better yet, the SCRIE and DRIE amount combined - compared to military spending or estate tax breaks or whatever white collar crime is going down this week. You're still paying taxes for bailing out the banks.

Second, you can PLAN all you like, you can save, you can buy a second house, and you can lose it all. What do you think happened in the recession? Lots of people with nice incomes and long term plans had the rug pulled out from under them, either by losing their income and never being able to recover it or by getting sick and losing their income and going flat broke.

Rich people and corporations are paying plenty. While I don't have a particular bone to pick with these two programs, in the end NY's generosity is from the very rich people fume about.

Never rely on envity or truthiness when arguing about socialist slavery. Only madmen think slavery is a viable remedy for the ills of mankind.
Socialism boils down to compulsory labor for the benefit of another and confiscation of surplus for the benefit of another.
It's great to be a recipient, but [bleep] to be the donor. And common sense tells us that once it no longer benefits us to generate a surplus, we'll slack off. And then socialism devolves to an equal distribution of misery and lack, as society seeks to become blessed recipients and shuns all strenuous endeavors.

There's no arguing about socialism because anyone who pays property taxes is paying school taxes. I don't have any kids, but I pay the taxes. There's a library tax and a road tax - how many of you NYers drive? Tolls subsidize the MTA. Not fair if you drive, but no way around it. Why not complain about that? No complaints about taxes for the police or fire dept and no complaints about the biggest handout of all, which is Medicare, then Social Security.

Social security started as a way to keep old people off the street and SCRIE is a continuation, in small part, in one city, where you CHOOSE to live, of the idea that we'd all rather live somewhere that didn't have people living in the street. California doesn't seem to like socialism so they're having a Hepatitis A outbreak and there's been some talk about re-emergence of medieval diseases like leprosy. Do you want to live like they do in California, stepping over people who live on the street, very literally, having been decamped from everywhere else? If so, feel free to move there and live with like-minded people.

SCRIE is not a handout to undeserving old people - and it wasn't me fuming about very rich old people gaming the system, so you need to make up your mind which side of that line you're really on - it's basically part of a larger decision about a quality of life we all want to live.

All of the above is true, but people don't want to hear the truth

Everybody wants to have their cake and eat it too

So they come on here to complain about how people are taking their "cake"

SCRIE is the least of the issues with rent regulation in NYC. With the Democritters taking control of the entire NYS government, they's passed the socialist decades long wet dream of rent regulation laws. This is going to have the effect of destroying any concept of affordable housing development in NYC. It's going to tighten the market, and the only thing that will ever get built is high end luxury housing (and probably not rental)
