Hi everyone;
Say I won an affordable apartment through Housing Connect. During the period I was awarded the apartment let’s say my income was 70 thousands dollars, and the AMI range for the apartment was between 50 and 80 thousand dollars. A few months after moving into the apartment I moved to a new job that pays 40 thousand dollars. Since I am no longer between the AMI for the apartment and can no longer afford it is there legal grounds to get out of the lease?

You would have to read your lease, but I would say no.

You could get a second job or take in a roommate.

Maybe if you find someone who meets the income requirements, they can take over your lease.

If there's nothing in your lease about leaving early or assigning your lease to someone else, and you don't want to find a second job or take in a roommate, contact the management office and ask what to do.

You can try to speak directly to the management office to see if they can cut your lease. Some lotteries have very long waiting lists and it wouldn't be a problem.
