Has anyone transferred from one apartment into a larger apartment within the same building and went through the process? For example, transferring from a studio to a one bedroom. How was your process? Was it complicated? And what information did you need to provided? I appreciate any help I can get. THank you.

I'm curious to hear about this myself. You're technically making a unit available with the transfer so I would think it wouldn't be an issue.

Many buildings are now having lotteries to get on the wait list for rerentals. What does that mean for those living in the building already? Would you have to “win” that lottery in order to transfer?

Years ago, each building kept its own wait list and you could just request to go on it. I’m thinking that this is gradually changing. If you want to transfer within the building you’re living in, why not ask the management what the process is? You will be either told you can go on the in-house wait list or that vacancies will be filled through Housing Connect or some other party.

I asked the same question to the rep showing my prospective unit and she said that as long as the end date for my lease and the 1BR lease match up, it shouldn't be a problem; it would be a conversation with management. I'm sure this differs from building to building, so definitely ask your management team!

Yes, I tried and was unsuccessful. They basically say you have to re-apply and "recertify" when the lottery opens again. Interestingly, they told me I can break my lease when I wish.

Did you get selected? I heard they check your income again to see if you qualify. But what if your income never changed?

Whether your income changes or not you need to go through the process all over again.

So, that means if your income qualified a few years ago, it may not qualify currently due to inflation and AMI changes?

Yes, in theory. You would have to run the specific numbers to see.

Not sure of the exact process, but my building has an internal list - actually the apartment I am in now was previously occupied by someone who upgraded to a one bedroom just across the hall. His apartment is still listed as mine in Seamless so delivery guys keep coming to my door first and I have to send them across the hall, lol.
