I’ve been contacted dozens of times by management companies for 1 bedroom lottery apartments even though we’re a family of three, a couple with a child. The rules changed a few years back to allow three people in a 1 bedroom. The only way I can see this working is if someone was desperate to move out of a shelter or just need to be off the street. Otherwise, unless there are hundreds of throples applying, it doesn’t make sense
I know three bedroom apartments are as rare as hens teeth in the lottery, but has anyone every been offered three bedroom for a three person family? Could this ever work in my favor?
I don’t think they’re gonna give a 3 bedroom to a couple with one child. A 2 bedroom is most likely as there’s no justification for the 3rd bedroom.

I don’t have an answer to your question. However, keep in mind that you might be getting offers of only 1 bedrooms because when they reach your number that is all that is available. There are many more 1 bedrooms lottery units than 3 bedroom units.
The only way they would offer a 3bedroom to a family of 3 is if there were two children of different sexes at a certain age but for a couple with one child that is most doubltful and if that should ever happen and you win it good luck to you and play the actual lottery as well.

I do know someone in a situation as stated above; a mother with her son and daughter. I don’t mean this in a nasty way, but I don’t imagine this happening for a couple and one child because there’s literally no need for a third bedroom (though I can understand there being a desire!). As you stated, three bedrooms are rare and there are family compositions that have a greater need for three bedrooms. Not sure if they operate by the same rules, but I do remember the wording for Mitchell Lama apartments also specify this (that families of three only qualify if there are children of the opposite sex).
If you wouldn’t be happy with a two-bedroom, you should look for a three on the open market.
Did you read the op? My complaint is about being offered one bedrooms repeatedly, not two. I’m perfectly fine with a two bedroom, if I could ever win one.

Thanks. That’s what I figured, and it makes sense. I just wanted to see if I should even bother to get my hopes up when all the adverts say 3 bedrooms are available to families of three, since they never specify composition. I know some places won’t give one bedrooms to single people, only to couples (and apparently a couple with a child.) None of these things are explicitly stated anywhere, unfortunately.

That makes sense. The sheer volume of 1 bedrooms compared to 2 and 3 is huge for just about every building. I’ve been racking my brain as to why every week I get a document request for a 1 bedrooms and never even a two bedroom, let alone a three.
I also think we’re getting offers for one bedrooms because our income overlaps two AMIs but not completely, knocking us out of contention for the 130 AMI 2bedrooms. Welp, fingers crossed. Back to the drawing board. Thanks.
