No problem. You should always read your own lease and all riders, this is just how it works for my building. Good luck!

Thanks! I’ll definitely share my experience on this forum if all goes through, it’s amazing how little information is given to us throughout this process!

This is spot on Satyrical - from the HPD s point of view, any applicant is presumed a cheater from the get go and has to demonstrate ad-nauseam that they are not.

Self-employed here too, and got rejected at the last minute because of a calculation mistake from agent - covid emergency loans counted as assets.

Now even though HPD support my case ("a loan cannot be counted as assets"), it is still up to me gather the proof, upload, argument, appeal and wait. I suppose they not-so-secretly hope that i ll give up.

I definitely felt that they wanted me to give up because they didn't want to deal with my "unusual", "annoying" or "complicated" income situation. I ended up getting approved btw and there are no recertifications for my building, thankfully (though I am no longer self-employed so the process would be a lot simpler if I did have to).

I know it can feel like self-employed people are not given the benefit of the doubt in the review process but it is important to remember that it would be a lot easier for a self-employed person to manipulate their income to falsely qualify for affordable housing than someone with 1 salary-based income source. While going through the process of getting approved can be a bit of a nightmare, I would actually prefer that to a bunch of folks falsely qualifying and taking affordable units away from people who need them.

I hear you, and i totally agree - there should be safeguards in this process. And there should be more affordable housing (that is another topic).

Brava for keeping on fighting till a successful ending - it must feel amazing to enjoy home in peace after such a hard-won battle - this a very inspiring story that helps me keep my hope high!
