So a while back I made a post talking about being chosen to submit my documents for a building and then ultimately being rejected because I was a full time student. WELL, with the keys to my apartment now in hand I can say with certainty that there can be exemptions to the “no full-time students” rule. If you are a full-time student PLEASE apply to the lotteries that you qualify for based on your income! This exemption can vary depending on the developers and their property managers but you may lucky enough to be chosen by a building that accepts full time students. Of course in my building the exemptions were if 1.You were part of the foster care system(I wonder why this would be an exemption) 2.You receive assistance under Title IV of the Social Security Act 3. You are a single parent with a dependent 4. You participate in a program receiving federal assistance. If you fall under these categories there is a slight possibility you might be accepted as a full time student. I’m making this post as I’ve seen at least 2 other full time students on this thread worry about the housing lottery and whether or not they were eligible for an apartment. Of course I’m only doing this to help fellow native New Yorkers and NOT the transplants who suck up our resources and leave once they get their fill.

Thank you! Do you know the rule for a two person household, where one person is a full time student? Or does it also vary by developer?

It could vary by developer, but in my building, if you are married and filing joint taxes AND your partner isn’t a full time student it would be an exemption. I also found this while digging online for the pdf file my building gave me hopefully it helps (page 60) https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/hpd/down...ual.pdf#page60

I can’t reference it since it was in my building’s pdf of documents that I had to fill out but I also found this link https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/hpd/down...ual.pdf#page60 and on page 60 it describes the same exemptions as I listed. Hopefully it helps.

Thank you! I’m glad I could help other full time students wondering the same thing.

Can't a FT student just say they're not in school? or Enroll part time and after approved add additional classes to their schedule?
