I am in a one-bed and was wondering if buildings allow switching to a different one-bed layout? Has anyone been in an affordable housing and leasing allowed you to transfer to another same size or bigger (two bed from one bed) unit?

if its a new development, they typically don't like you to transfer units

You should ask management. Each development is different. It’s at their discretion.

Be sure you are signed up for re-rentals on Housing Connect 2. If you are very lucky you might get called for a vacancy at your same building for a larger unit or one you like better. Management might ignore or not that you are breaking your lease to move. I am uncertain re-rentals are a mandatory process, a building might choose instead to just have another lottery posted to HC2,

You can learn about re-rentals on the HC2 page or search this forum for the term.

Meanwhile, be a good tenant that they would like to keep. You have to ask yourself, what benefit does the building see for itself in letting you change units? One benefit might be it enables them to raise the rent on the next tenant of your unit, I am not sure if that is true.

It’s likely building dependent but the rule is this in my building: (a development built in mid 2010s):

You can apply for a transfer unit if increasing or decreasing apartment size.

Ex: if in a 1 bedroom you can apply for a vacant 2 bedroom or studio and vice versa.. But you can’t go from 2 bedroom to 2 bedroom.

Could just be management company/building dependent. I have neighbors who have done variations of the above. One neighbor wanted to switch from a 2 bedroom to a vacant 2 bedroom that had a balcony - neighbor was willing to pay the increased listing price for balcony apartment, but that was the response management gave them.

Agreed. Every building management differs because mine stated that the only way I could increase my house hold would be if my partner and I were married.
