How reasonable (in terms of time and cost) would it be to try to commute to Philadelphia from NYC (and back) one evening a week by train?

the cheapest easiest way is nj transit or amtrak from union station to penn station.

Thanks! How long does it take? And are there several trains a day?

Lots of people live in Philadelphia and commute to NY every day ! I wouldn't want to do it but people do.
The trip on Amtrak takes between an hour on an acela train to an hour and a half on a regional train and costs between $50 and $150 depending on time and type of train.

NJ transit trains take much longer( about 2 1/2 hrs) and you have to change in Trenton but cost a lot less.... like $15.00
Lots and lots of trains all day every day on both.

You also might want to consider a chinatown bus.Maybe $20 round trip

Look up Bolt or Mega bus services - they might work better for you vs the train if cost is a big concern

Yes Bolt and Mega are much cheaper and faster than NJT-SEPTA....Tickets are as cheap as 1$ if booked early...I never seen it get higher than 15$ one-way...

Also true alot of people live in Philly and commute to the city (some do it 5 days a week) because its cheaper COL and pretty much within travel times of a NYC resident of 90mins - 2hrs.

I took Bolt a few weeks ago. It was very quick and they have free WiFi. I took New Century (a Chinatown bus) back and it was not nearly as nice. There's no WiFi and the passengers were, to be polite, not as well-heeled. Lots of eating at talking loudly on cell phones. Also, the bus went through Staten Island and stopped in Brooklyn first.

I recommend Bolt (unless you live in Brooklyn).

When I go to NYC I take the Chinatown Bus, it takes you from Center City Philadelphia to Chinatown in Manhattan non stop. Round trip is $20 and it takes about 2 hours. The people on the bus aren't usually the creme de la creme of society, but I'm not marrying or living with them, just a bus ride. The other good thing is the bus runs every half hour 7am to 11pm I think.
