On Saturday I need to get from Penn Station to Yankee Stadium via subway. From what I can tell it looks like I should take the A or C train to 59th St. and then transfer to the D train. Does this sound correct?

Yes, you're correct. Take an uptown A or C train to 59th St, then transfer to a Bronx-bound D train and get off at Yankee Stadium.

or you could walk two blocks and take the D train from 34th-Herald Square and you might have a better chance of getting a seat.

Default you could also

take the 2 train at 34th and 7th(Penn Station) to 149th street/Grand Concourse and transfer for the 4 uptown to 161 street

I would think so. When I take the D, I usually board at 34th or 42nd and by the time it gets to 59th, it's standing room only, especially on a weekend game.

Might actually be the fastest route but oh,god that 149th station!
It might be too much for someone not accustomed to the worst that the subways can offer.

The #4 is probably faster because it makes fewer stops from midtown to The Bronx, but from Penn Station, the D option is more direct.

Depends on which Penn Station you get off at since the "A",which is 8th Ave, and the 1,2 & 3, which is 7th Avenue, lines all stop there.

From the "A" take it to 59th St and transfer to the Bronx bound "D".

From the #s 1, 2, & 3 lines, take the take the #2 to 149th St. and Grand Concourse go upstairs and catch the Woodlawn bound #4 one stop to 161St. & Yankee Station or

Take the #2 or 3 to Times Square, transfer for shuttle to Grand Central and take the Woodlawn bound #4.

The easiest route is the "A" to 59th than transfer to the 205th St. "D" train to 161st St. & Yankee Stadium.

Remember though that most weekends somes lines run local in Manhattan due to track work.
