I read the article but haven't seen the tapes. I think anyone that has spent a significant amount of time in NYC, especially in higher crime communities, knows the deal. We know the crime stats are fudged, we know there are quotas, and we know that overall the job of a police officer is pretty crappy inside and outside the precinct.

We know that harassment by police officers occur, but most people don't realize it is because police officers themselves are being harassed by their superiors to make their quotas. I do agree that everyone who works is judged on something, and I don't necessarily believe the quotas are bad, but they are bad in the way they are being manipulated and ultimately taking away from actual police work and making us LESS safe, not more safe. And therein lies the problem with the quota system for me....if you are downgrading a crime to fudge the stats/meet quotas, it is less likely you will look for the perp..which means he will strike again and again.

Thanks NYer for this great article though...I think more people should know how broken the police force is...and the fact that they are no longer getting recruits/people not just because of perceived low salary, it is about the poor culture, dysfunctional system, and the obsession with numbers and not about actual policing. Police officers want to police and increase safety...not simply spend their days racing around to issue 2 more cell phone tickets and 3 expired inspection sticker tickets.

Seems highly political. If the reports were not being wrongly downgraded to lesser offenses, crime stats would look much worse for the precinct, which makes the police look like they're what, not doing a good enough job?

The Village Voice has been covering it in installments for about a month and a half now. A former police officer was able to tape conversations with his supervisors and they are available at the village voice website. For those that have had ample suspicions about crime statistics this story proves that NYPD for about the past 8-10 years has been manipulating statistics and downgrading crimes. It also proves there such a thing as a summons quota. These are just several of the bombshells. I myself would usually argue against those who said crime stats were heavily manipulated but this story has converted me. This is major. Do yourselves a favor and get informed...

Good stuff.

I was gonna post about this when the story first broke but I figured why bother. Too many people on this board drink the crime stat kool-aid, naively quoting compstat data like baseball stats...smh. But yeah, this doesn't surprise me. I was assaulted about a year ago in an incident in Mott Haven and the cops at the 40th precinct on Alexander Ave. refused to file a report or do anything because I didn't have any obvious injuries. Needless to say I'll never bother cooperating with the NYPD again.

According to the Washington Post, we have over 800,000 people in our communities nationwide with top secret clearance. People today are afraid to complain or speak up about abuses because of a Stasi-like presence in our communities that everyone knows about but no one will admit. We have some dark days ahead.

Here are a pair of recent articles on this topic...

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/...s_no_jobs.html

Tenants slapped with trespassing tickets by NYPD, but they were just going inside their own home

It's definitely encouraging to see some steady back-page coverage from a paper like the daily news but still no real major coverage on this...

Funny how the VV broke this story and the mainstream media is just now getting around to reporting on it. I remember hearing this story on the news (forget which channel) and said to myself "didn't someone post this on the City Data boards 2 months ago???). Also funny how the mainstream media doesn't consider this front page news when it should be.
