Now I am.
Any other ideas?

At below market rent i might add...lol...

if he had so many complaints about living there and so many complaints about the landlord he was free to move at any time , he just chose not to.....
so now he wants to charge the landlord to move....

he must really hate the living conditions if he is still there... guess its worth enduring if he gets the landlord to offer a bigger buy out. i know i would have been long gone regardless if i didnt want to be there.

personally i think it stinks we have to pay 50-100k to our tenants to not renew a lease so we can sell the apartments but thats the cost of breaking a contract.

if the tenant wants to break the lease we charge them and if we want to break the contract we pay them.. looks the they get the better deal but we throw it in the general cost of doing business as a landlord in nyc.

U P D A T E

Just thought all of you would like to know that on May 1, 2011 I was bought out of my lease for $24,500.

Yup.
Enjoy your bickering about the rent laws all you like.
I got MORE than I thought I would and it was a painless process.
Why shouldn't I have taken it?
He offered---I accepted.

OMG,You gave up an 800/mo stabilized apartment in the village for 24,500 ? I thought most people got at least double that.

Where will you go with that ? It will be gone in a couple of short years !

Landlord did okay.

So now the landlord will put in a new kitchen and bath for 20 G's and CALL it $48,000 Capital Improvements and thus divided by 40 he can raise the rent by $1200 to get the magic number...$2000 and the apartment LEAVES rent stabilization forever. If he can find a dumb jackass to pay $3000 then that's the legal rent.
