My wife and I are planning to spend a weekend in NYC. This is our fifth trip and we always stayed in NJ hotels because manhattan hotels are overpriced. Now I'm thinking about the short term apt rentals on craigslist. Are they reliable? I won't do stupid things like wiring money and will only do face-to-face transactions. There are tons of offering around 100-150 per night for an apt in manhattan/brooklyn. Is this too good to be true?

Anyone else have experience using Airbnb? Looks more reliable than craigslist

Try Roomorama, I had a great experience with an apt from there in NY.

Would you really feel safe with your wife in a stranger's home in the city? I live here and I wouldn't do that. Try something in Queens. Astoria, Sunnyside, etc. The La Quinta by 40th on Queens Blvd. is 100/night...15 min to midtown on the 7....safe...clean..locks on the doors and a person at the front desk. I would worry about getting set up. Who is going to hear that when it happens? Maybe I'm paranoid, but saving a few bucks is not worth trusting your well-being and belongings to a stranger in an off the record, under-the-table agreement.
