when I stand in front of the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue? Will be coming to town soon and I wonder if I can see it above the others when I step out into the city.

Default you may not be able to see the ESB

from the sidewalk in front of the PBT on 8th Avenue because there are several tall buildings blocking the view, which will be in a southeasterly direction from the PABT

you may have to walk downtown on 8th Avenue a few blocks to be able to see it because 8th avenue in the 30's has lower buildings that may permit a view

however, if you are coming thru the Lincoln Tunnel you should be able to see the ESB perhaps when the bus gets out of the tunnel and definitely from the NJ side

But don't keep looking up and get yourself hit by a taxi out there!

Enjoy your visit to the city.

Isn't The New York Times Building across the street? It's the same exact height as the Chrysler Building (1,046 feet ). I know this is about the Empire State Building but that's an impressive building too.

This photo shows the view from the corner of 8th Ave. & 42nd St. Port Authority. There are too many tall closely spaced buildings that will block your view of the Empire State Building. You would need to be on 34th Street and 8th to get a decent view of the Empire State Building or on 6th Ave.

Here is the NYTimes building directly in front of the Port Authority Building:

33rd and 8th infront of Local Bar and Grill is the best place to view unobstructed. Stand at the steps of the train entrance.
