I am looking to move here with my wife, we are both born and raised New Yorkers from Washington Heights. We are both Irish-Americans, I was driving around Bainbridge by montefiore and by the D Train subway, it looks like a decent mixed neighborhood. This was at 12 in the afternoon though, I know the neighborhood is mostly Hispanic or Irish, how is the neighborhood at night? Is it safe for my wife to walk our dog or goto the store without the worry of being robbed/mugged? I know that can happen anywhere, but you what I mean does Bainbridge have a higher risk then a normal neighborhood? I'm looking above Bedford Park blvd above 205th. Please post your opinions on the area, I'm moving from Tibbett avenue in Kingsbridge/Riverdale. I grew up in a bad area of Washington heights as a kid and I don't want to move back to one, Bainbridge looks nice though and the rent prices seem great compared to Riverdale. But the main thing is the safety and will an Irish-American stick out like a sore thumb? Thank you all.
And don't you know that " Bainbridge",as the neighborhood was known not too long ago was also a big Irish neighborhood?And there are lots of Irish still there? Notice any of the bars with Irish names along Bainbridge Ave?
I wouldn't call it an Irish neighborhood anymore but I don't think you will stand out like a sore thumb.

Yah I noticed that, but there could still be crime, Irish commit crimes as well. I was just wondering because I've heard mixed opinions on the neighborhood, I really loved it actually the D train being there, all of the stores and everything, that theres still an Irish presence. I thought it was a great neighborhood to be honest with you, the thing is my lease is up November 1st and i have to find an apartment pretty soon, I would just like to find an area to start with. So you think Bainbridge is a good area at night too? would you have any rental agencies numbers/websites? Because I can't find any Bainbridge apartments on craigslist.
Also I just don't want to be the 'minority' in the neighborhood. I'm glad that theres other Irish there.
Frankie..you'll be fine. The area is pretty decent and very affordable compared to the other outer boroughs. Plus the commute to the City is about 30 minutes, give or take which if you think about it...isn't bad at all. Also, you will not be the only white person in the neighborhood. Just like any NYC neighborhood, you'll see your fair share of undesirables hanging out (usually young people, teenagers) but as a whole, the area is pretty nice and safe. Crime is much lower in that area which is considered to be the Norwood section of the Bronx. Good luck in the apartment and try to keep us posted on your experience in the neighborhood. Curious to know how it turns out for you guys.
I live on the other side of Mosholu Parkway in Bedford Park. I like the area. It's quite safe and affordable. It's majority latino but it's pretty mixed so you won't stand out (I'm as white as they get).
205th down by Perry, Hull Decatur has changed esp. at night i had read an article in the Norwood News about that , it's quieter and mellower than Wash Hts. I think the Bedford Park side of the pkwy is nicer than the Norwood side, it looks quieter and better kept
Don't know much about the Bainbridge area, I know theres still a good amount of Irish there, its a bit rundown though, its definitely not the worst area but its not the best, its going to look MUCH different at 12 at night then 12 in the afternoon, trust me, I think thats a high drug anyway.... but your best bet would be Bedford Park by Mosholu Parkway, thats a great area, nicely mixed, Irish, Italians, Puerto Ricans, Albanians, Koreans, almost everything,....plus they do have the 4 train there.
This is how diverse the neighborhood is btw;
Bedford Park's ethnic diversity manifests itself in an assortment of ways besides the formation of enclaves. Among the national symbols one may see strolling the neighborhood include the Double-Headed Eagle(the emblem of Albania), the icon of Our Lady of Guadalupe (sacred to Catholic Mexicans), the Shamrock of Ireland, the Arabic calligraphy of the Shahadah (the Muslim profession of faith), or the Coqui of Puerto Rico. A vast assortment of newspapers are sold in local convenience stores, including The Echo of Ireland, Albanian-language Bota Sot of Kosovo and the Spanish-language local newspapers El Diario/La Prensa , and El Hoy.
Residents of Bedford Park appreciate their quality of life. The neighborhood's accessibility, coupled with affordable housing, diversity and a strong sense of community, makes this Bedford Park a popular destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
The bainbridge area the OP mentioned is NOT a high drug area. I know the area very well. Its actually a pretty nice area especially for the Bronx since the majority of the other neighborhoods are way worse and more run down. Is it perfect? No but what NYC neighborhood is? If you do find one, be ready to pay through the nose. I think the OP will be fine living on bainbridge.
