I lucked up and got a 1bdrm for $600! I was paying $900 for the one I'm leavin. I came and checked out the building and everything and I see a lot of younger people living here. I thought I would be moving in with a bunch of senior citizens, but I'm definitely not complaining.
They only thing they told me is I have to receritify my income every year I renew the lease. No problem. I just want to know when I can have a 2bdrm, since I have a child. Hes 3 and I'm 22 so they said I don't qualify for the 2bdrm. Sucks, but oh well. For 600 bucks, we can deal with that!
And I know someone is going to ask, but no, it is NOT the projects.

Rent stabilization, as I understand it, means that your rent cannot go up more than a certain percentage at a time. Meaning if someone lived in your apartment for 30 years and moves out, then the new rent can only be a certain percentage more than the person who lived there before you.
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. That is kinda what I have read in the leases I have had over the years.

Sort of true but theres more to it. If the apt. was really below market, what landlords do is GUT the apartment and build it fresh from the ground up. Once they're done, they can charge the market rent for the apartment or deregulate the apartment due to the high cost of the renovation project.
I don't doubt that she has an apt for that rent, the question is WHERE is the apt. I know where it ISN'T...but the op mysteriously left out the location of this wonderful 1 bedroom "steal" for $600. I suspect the op is low-income, and is living in one of the newly rehabbed affordable housing buildings or new construction affordable housing buildings in the Bronx or Brooklyn. If you meet the strict income, employment history, and credit requirements, you can easily find these types of new apts.

Prove me wrong.
Eh, I left it out because its not your business where I live. The point of this thread, what me just basically saying/asking that rent-stabilization isn't just for old folks anymore, like I thought. That's all

Your reply comes off as rather rude, because the point is - I was going to ask the same question - it seems unlikely that you got a great apartment in a great neighborhood at that price.
I can't imagine why you thought rent stabilization is a function of age - anyone grabs it who can. Perhaps you're confusing it with rent controlled apartments, which at this point are likely to belong to older people.
