Heading to NYC with the gf for a few days. We're in our late-20's. Probably doing nicer places uptown for breakfasts/lunches and walks and spending evenings and dinners downtown at midrange restaurants and hitting dive bars and divey dance clubs. What should I bring/avoid? And for the gf- what do girls usually wear out?

NYC weather fluctuates...could feel like early fall or the middle of winter....check weather.com before you come.

Seriously. The first week of November is bizarre. My friend got married on the first weekend and it was 70 degrees. That was a few years back, but I always remember it because the random warm spell has happened repeatedly.

If you are going to divey places, anything dark will blend in nicely for both of you. Just tell your girlfriend not to wear super high heels. You can always tell the bride and tunnel girls when the are wobbling around in their uncomfortable shoes after a few drinks. Or worse, when they take their shoes off and walk barefoot on NYC's nasty streets.

The best single word of advice I give to friends who visit is : Layers.
