I am considering a few places to live.

One is 153rd and St. Nicholas Avenue

2nd is 177th Street, just west of Broadway next to the park

3rd is 139th and Amsterdam

4th is 52nd St. and Northern Blvd in Astoria

Thoughts on safety for all these areas please?

The first 3 are bad locations. End of story.
I cant find the 4th location so I can't give you any info. Im sure its better then the first 3, but Astoria varies by location. One area might be nice and clean while the other is poor and full of problems. But again, I doubt anywhere in that area is as bad as uptown.

Here is a tip I use to determine the quality of a neighborhood- If there is run-down fried chicken joints, the neighborhood sucks.

The police department isn't even a block away. And the place on 177th, I heard the neighborhoods up there are okay as long as they are west of Broadway. No?

Well, correct me if I'm wrong but the west of Broadway rule only applies to Inwood, not Washington Heights.

I can't correct you because I don't know. I checked out a place not even a two minutes walk from the A train and the building was expensive looking. Tall ceilings, enormous apartments, right on the river. The only sketchy part about it I'd guess would be the park next to it at night, but I'll just walk on the other side of the street.

Washington Heights is sketchy. Just because its a nice apartment doesn't mean its a nice area.

153rd & St. Nick is quiet. Shouldn't have any problems over there and the train is only 2 blocks away.

139th & Amsterdam is about the same. You may see some young people hanging out from time to time, but not a lot of drama.

Safety for both locations is about the same. 139th is more served by the 1 train though you could walk to the train on 145th. I wouldn't walk through St. Nicholas Park at night though.

The 153rd street location has access to both the A/C and 1 trains.

I just talked to one of the doormen that works in my hotel and she lives on 181st. She said 153rd and Nick is loud with music and cars.

She said 177th where the A at is safe, but east of St. Nick is looking for trouble.

Look, anything above 135th street sucks. Period.
