I'm talking radio scanners.

When I was there in 2007, I had my Radio Shack PRO-97 scanner, the frequencies for the police and fire and other services already programmed into it, and it was mad crazy active. It was like non-stop, five or six of the frequencies I programmed into there going at once. NYC, because of its density and activity, must be one of the best places to scan in the United States. Are New Yorkers aware of this? Are scanners common in New York City?

I don't think too many New Yorkers listen to police/fire department radio transmissions. However, it's something that I do on occasion via the web.

When I was a kid we had a scanner in the kitchen that we never turned off. We never really "listened" to it as it was just on as noise. One day we heard the fire department being dispatched to our house, we went outside and the house across the street was on fire. Who ever called 911 just reported the incorrect address.

I have a police scanner on my android phone, I can hear dispatches right from the 40th precicnt. I also can hear air traffic control towers from newark international airports and other port authority faclities. Its really cool having a scanner on your phone. It all happens during real time.

I have had scanners for as long as I can remember. My pride and joy is a Radio Shack Pro-2006 that I've had for years and years. Still works like new.

I listen mostly in the winter time because I'm indoors more but if I heard a whole lot of sirens going off I'll flip it on to see what's up.

I have a Uniden BC346XT, nice little radio, great sound, with a little help from some members of RadioReference.com I was able to program it myself through the computer. Owners manuals are totally useless as far as learning how to program a scanner.

I listen to NYPD(especially when there is an aviation unit flying nearby) FDNY,DSNY(especially during a snowstorm)EMS,MTA Bus,NYCT Bus.

There are people who have a scanner shack in their homes, I could only have 1 radio on at a time and not several of them.
