I might be a little late to the party but has anyone else noticed the Duane Reade pharmacies closing in the outer boroughs. There were two that I usually went to, one of them just opened last year, both gone on September 1 and the spaces have not been replaced as of yet.

I've also heard about the closings in Brooklyn as well.

I know Walgreen's bought them back in February but it seems like they only want DR's in Manhattan only. In some of these neighborhoods, the Duane Reade was the only pharmacy around and now it's gone and the neighborhood gets screwed over.

Just wanted to know if anyone heard anything recent from DR or Walgreen's.

Default yes

I believe a DR on W 231 street off broadway in Kingsbridge was closed and a DR on Mclean Avenue in Yonkers was closed

Rite-Aid closings are coming as well.Way too much expansion, poor stock price etc.Although I do not know how saturated the Rite-Aid market is currently in NYC.

2 years ago, there was a building being built on the edge of a local shopping center, 1 block from a DR. Soon we could tell that it would be 2 stores.

One side is CVS and the other is Walgreens. Seriously! (the DR recently closed)

I can't imagine DR is struggling financially. Off the top of my head they have to be one of the more dominant chain stores here in NYC along with Starbucks, McD's, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, etc...although maybe just maybe they miscalculated a smidge and over-expanded...

Walgreens bought them right? But correct me if I'm wrong, the stores are keeping the DR brand name and image right?

I think so. They are probably closing DRs that are near Walgreen stores

When Rite Aid bought out Eckards (sp?) they changed the one by me practically overnight. I got some great deals as they had to get rid of any old Eckards store brands. Everything was 1/3 price.

walgreens has taken over duane reade... store managers have told me that if there is a walgreens near a duane reade location, they are simply closing the dr... if there isn't one in the area, they may leave the duane reade there, under the dr name...
