right now i'm looking at different places to go to medical school as i finish up my pre-med studies, and new yorkers make a killing in this industry, so i'm definitely interested.. a thing i've noticed tho, reading through the forums, is that mexicans don't sound like they really fit in here.. ?
i've noticed crimes against illegals (or dayworkers), and other gang related garbage, but, as a mexican, a handsome professional, am i going to run into any problems?
i've heard of other hispanics, e.g. dominicans beating up someone just cause of them being mexican... ? i have a little one and our safety comes first, so i won't put up with any of that wherever we go, i just hope that it isn't a problem here
please no sugar coating, i'm looking for honesty so tell me like it really is
anyone care to share?

Hey i'm not from NY, but I guess being rude or offensive towards Mexican's is the latest rage not only in NY but all over hasn't it? I hope we keep our heads held high and not allow the mindless and ignorants get in our way. We are setting the way for our children so it will all be worthwhile in the end. Pa'lante!!

I'm not Mexican, but I live in Washington Heights and have noticed some tensions. But that hasn't stopped the Mexican community from thriving. I see inroads every day and as a native of CA, it brings a smile to my face.

I would not worry about it if I were you. Every new group goes through growing pains, and what some mexicans are going through currently is nothing, I mean really nothing, compared to what prior new groups did when they flooded into NYC. You will be fine...don't let a few scary stories worry you.

If there are problems, they're much more about class than race. You should be fine.

Most New Yorkers are tolerant of Hispanic people. Unfortunately, some New Yorkers in Staten Island and Long Island have become increasingly disrespectful to Mexicans. In recent weeks there were physical altercations perpetrated on Mexican men by angry Whites. Long Island confontations were fueled by White folk feeling Mexican day-laborers were taking construction jobs away from them. According to news, the Staten Island incident was racial. A young Mexican-American man was beat up by White racist threatening to kill him just for being Mexican. Fortunately, community leaders and local NYPD came out to stand united in support of the victim.
You are welcome to try good NYC med. schools (NYU, Columbia, Memorial-Sloan, DownState) Amigo. Family man, as yourself, knows being by Italian/Irish bars in Staten Island and Long Island is not a good idea.

The anger is against illegals. If you come here legally, support yourself and don't expect handouts, you'll do wonderfully!

Just gotta say - medical professionals don't make a killing in nyc. Nyc is over saturated with dr's and you would easily do better in another less saturated location. As well, unless you are naturally rich or have someone else supporting you the salary you make as a resident (after med school) will NOT support a family in nyc.
One other think to consider is the debt you will incure in medical school and what kind of speciliaty you will be going into. If you get into a private med school and don't have a huge wadge of cash or someone to pay for it you will be gaining hefty hefty loans that might not be payable unless you go for a big paying specialty. As well, one can't always get into the speciality one wants. Medschool & residency are pretty cut throat.
Mexican's fit in fine in nyc. I wouldn't worry about it.
Good luck.
