A little bit more Bronx history: if you take the #4 train to 138 Street, you can see mosaics along the wall reading "MH." This station used to be called Mott Haven. Those new black and white signs cover up the originals.
Also highly recommended, Ultan's classic book The Beautiful Bronx, 1920-1950.
I didn't notice that until you mentioned that at a previous thread...hopefully if/when they renovate this station, they keep those historic pieces and incorporate them into the rehab.
The station at 149/Concourse is also the only one in the city featuring those mosaic rosettes. (I can talk about subway stations all day long...as long as I know I've got an audience!)
Do the hipsters live generally south of Major Deegan? Around Bruckner Blvd? Is whole blocks inhabited by them or just a couple rehabbed bldgs?
South of the major deegan. Some also rent in the brownstones on alexander avenue. Some also live in rehabbed apartments near rider ave and canal place.
They are north and south of the Deegan...I have them by me also (Northern Mott Haven)..but they are also in converted wharehouses throughout the area (south of 161st).
