Hi, I'm looking at an apartment in the vicinity of 188th Street, near Wadsworth and St. Nicholas Aves. I know everyone says it's so much better west of Broadway, but the reason I'm looking here is my job really doesn't pay very well and my roommate situation has turned sour in a big way.

Obviously, the area (St. Nicholas especially) is heavily Dominican - but I'm sure I could learn to like Dominican food, and there are a lot of stores nearby.

I'm a single, pasty Causcasian woman who's somewhat visually impaired. The building itself seems all right, and obviously I like the apt. At most, I'd be coming home late (after midnight) maybe once a month.

So what do you think? Is this too dangerous an area for someone like me? Or should I just cave and spend half my monthly income on rent (maybe I should do that? maybe that's normal?)

The few times I've been up to 188th and Wadsworth, there were always a lot of people in the street, hanging outside their buildings. To me, that's a sign of safety, in that there are eyes on the street. To be sure, go up there late one night and walk from the 191st station to get a feel for whether or not you think you'd be ok.

I live up there but well west of broadway.

I don't think it will be terribly dangerous is you are not out very late, stay where there are people, and stay in front of residential buildings, and learn to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

But there are cons. It isn't as safe for a single white woman as elsewhere just a little more expensive. You might be harassed, which is annoying. You might get sick of the noise: constant salsa music at all hours, car alarms going off.
