Plenty of people absolutely love Shake Shack, but I think the food is mediocre. I have tried two different kinds of burgers there and don't understand the hype. I thought the burgers at Minetta Tavern, Txikito, and The Spotted Pig were very good, if you want some recommendations.

Go to the website BEFORE you go stand on line.
They have a "LIVE LINE CHECK" video feed during store hours.

But hey---this is NYC----why stand on line for an hour for a burger?
There are waaaayyyy too many choices right there around 23rd and Madison to justify standing around like a tourist.

Is it worth the line? Probably not. Have I ever regretted waiting in line? Nope.

Shake Shack is by far the best burger in town. Word of advice though get two if you have a decent appetite because they are rather small.

If you really like food and shopping, I have another recommendation for you. Eataly (a play on the words "eat" + "Italy") just opened at Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street - only a block away from Shake Shack. It's a huge Italian specialty foods store with a few different restaurants inside where you can sample small plates, have a personal pizza, try different wines and olives, etc. I live about 10-15 minutes on foot from the store and have been three times in the last two weeks.

Burger Joint in the Parker Meridian is much better than Shake Shack and since it's a little bit hidden, the line is never as long.
