understand it's probably not as nice as Hamilton Heights below it (w 120s-140s) but just wanted to see others' opinion on 155/Amsterdam area..

..is the neighborhood changing and is the old 'truth' that anything east of Broadway is still unsafe? thnks

I think it's worse below like from 143rd - 154th....and also worse from 156th to 163rd. To me 155th doesn't look as bad just because in front of the row of tenements is a cemetary...whereas below or above your sorrounded by tenements. Also there is a school right there and what looks to be a housing pj but I think it's some sort of subsidized housing for the elderly.

155th is still Hamilton Heights if you are on the side of the street that the apt buildings are on.

It is a mixed bag over there. It is safe enough, in the day time, and early evening. If you are comfortable in an urban environment maybe you feel safe enough at night as well.

I would not live over there. Even though buildings are nice on Riverside Drive, it is kind of isolated between Bway and Riverside Drive, and the homeless hang out over there. This is not to say that all homeless people are bad, but if you are homeless and hanging out over there, I would think that you would have to be tough.

From Bway over to St Nick it is ok, but there is drug dealing going on in that area, and all the problems that go with it. Most people in that area have been there for years and know what to look out for.

SuperMario's advice is correct.
