I take the train to/from the South Bronx daily, and it's usually fine. If it's late, my boyfriend walks me home from the station. If it's not late, but its dark out, I talk to someone on the phone while I walk so I don't get harassed as much.
I agree that you will be fine traveling any way you go. The Bronx's reputation is far worse than it is today...it will be awhile before it is lived down. You'll be fine!
I may need to go from Manhattan to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx once or twice a week on Tuesday and Wednesday nights and I was wondering if it is safe to ride the line 5 subway to and from the E.180 street subway stop at night. I'm new in the city and have been given conflicting stories by friends and would really appreciate any info you can provide. Thanks!

Ok...I forgot the m...my oversight. However, it's obvious the BX11 (if there's such a thing) and BX12 don't run in Manhattan. I stand corrected.
Wrong again.
The Bx11 runs to Washington Heights and the Bx12 to Inwood.
