We currently live in Manhattan, but like many others, would like to increase our living space. Between the two of us, our income is around $200K per year, but we certainly aren't materialistic 'yuppie types'. Would love to get a 2 BR in the 600-700K range - approx 900-1000 sq ft. What areas should we look at? We've heard a lot about Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights/Dumbo in Brooklyn, but want to make sure we don't get stuck with tunnel vision. Are there any other areas to look at? What about Queens?
Requirements are: safe, nice neighboorhood feel, decent restaurants, lots of other families (as we'd like to start our own), relatively easy commute to both Midtown and WFC. 2 BRs in the 600-700K range (of course cheaper too, if possible). Also interested in the parking situation as we'd like to finally get ourselves a car.

if you don't mind being a bit from the city, try bayside, douglaston, little neck
very suburban parts of queens and if you can get a place near a LIRR station its about 30 minutes to the city

Check out the Sunday Real Estate Classified section of the New York Times. Perform a search for co-ops/condos in Jackson Heights, Queens. You'll find numerous listings of gorgeous apartments listed at or about your price range. Jackson Heights is loaded with great ethnic restaurants. It's a hop, skip and a jump away from midtown. The #7, E, F, R, G, N trains are centrally located, as well as the Q32 bus that goes down Roosevelt Avenue and travels down Fifth in Manhattan. If you want to go a step further, join in on the discussion in the Jackson Heights Family Yahoo group board. You'll see there are many families in the neighborhood and a true sense of community.
I think that Bayside is the nicest area in Queens, some very nice co-ops there. We almost bought a co-op there but opted for a house on The Island instead. If you want easier access to the city then I would suggest you check out Forest Hills. Parking would be difficult in Forest Hills if the co-op doesn't have it's own parking garage.
Astoria, Queens - Diversity is there (Greeks, Mexicans, Irish, Albanians, Arabs, Dominicans). Restuarants are there. Good place to raise a family. Parking is a bit of a hastle at night. One of the safer neighborhoods in the city, but that doesn't mean the occasional crime doesn't happen. I'm not sure how easy getting to Midtown is.
Van Cortlandt Village, Bronx - Diversity is their (Jews, Irish, Dominicans, Germans, Blacks). Restaurants are lacking, besides a pizza parlor and a Chinese restuarant. Parking is easy. The neighborhood is probably the quietest neighborhood in the city when it comes to crime, second to the neighboring Riverdale community. The neighborhood is currently a hot spot for ex-Manhattanites looking to raise a family, as mentioned by MSNBC and the New York Times, as their are numerous parks, lots of trees, a library and lots of schools surrounding the area (private and public). You can get to midtown in 30 minutes by taking the BXM3, or walking down a few blocks to the 1 train. 1 Bedroom apartments range from $700-$950, 2 bedroom apartments from $1,000-$1,250, and 3 bedroom apartments from $1,500-$1,750 (My family and I only pay $1100 a month for a three bedroom apartment, at the moment.)
Riverdale - Diversity isn't so much there, with a predominate Jewish population. Extremely safe and quiet. Not too many restaurants besides small pizzerias. The second richest community in New York behind the upper east side, so you might not want to move here. I'm sure some BXM buses run here, but not sure how many of them go to Midtown.
Riverdale has a lot more dining options than just some pizzerias. In Riverdale there are lots of Chinese restaurants, couple of sushi places, thai, indians, bbq, decent number of irish pubs.
Personally I'd reccomend that he OP look into Forrest Hills. I think it has what you are looking for.

Well I was referring strictly to the Fieldston section, but if you go out a bit, you are right.
there's a very active families group in jackson heights. I think someone else mentioned it as well. For $600K you could get a palatial place -- more than 900sq ft - , and not far from the E/F subway (3 stops to midtown). To see properties in your price range check michael carfagna properties. he advertises a few every week in the times but also has his own site.
forest hills is nice as well. The difference seems to be that FH is a bit more white than jh, has a few more chain stores like barnes and noble, starbucks, nysc etc. but JH has a much more interesting vibe and appeals more to creative people. (but supposedly starbucks is coming to jh as well ) Many writers, artists, film people moving into and already live in the neighborhood. Seth Kugel, a NY Times writer, recently bought a coop in jh and has done a few pieces lately in the times about the restaurants and garden tours. Prices are about the same in both neighborhoods as far as I can tell.
Bay Ridge in brooklyn woud also be a good choice, though quite a bit further from manhattan than jh.
