We are a middle aged white couple, and I'm considering a job which would require us to live and work in South Jamaica, probably near Merrick & Baisley. Is being white in this neighborhood a non-issue, or will we get harrassed? Is it safe at night to take the Q85 or go to the LIRR Locust Street or St. Albans stations? We've lived in big city neighborhoods before, but I don't know anything about this part of NYC. Thanks for any advice.

It's not the best area but I doubt you'd get harassed but never let your guard down. Actually Merrick & Baisley is the border of Laurelton, St. Albans, & South Jamaica/Locust Manor. This particular area is more moderate in terms of crime compared to areas just blocks west & northwest. I'd recommend trying to stay generally East of of Merrick Blvd.

I don't know about the St. Albans station but the Locust Manor station (namely the North exit/entrance along Bedell St.) can be pretty "iffy" at night since it's fairly dark and near a forested area, people have been robbed before. However it may be different if you enter from off of Farmers Blvd (south exit/entrance) since it's a busier street. And at night taking the Q85 is a better option than walking, however the frequency in which the buses come may be a problem, I doubt you'd want to wait upwards of 20-30 minutes for a bus to come.

I'm familiar with this area, I used to live in this general area, I frequent it often too whenever I'm in town.

merrick and baisley? hit or miss.
i dont think you will be personally subjected to crime just because you're white. its an average area. not bad, but not good either.
i think you really wont have a problem over there. as long as u command respect you'll get it back.

Can you move to Jamaica, not south Jamaica? I live near Rosedale/JFK area and it's quiet out here. Never a problem. Even I live somewhat near that area and I would never go around there

wow, I am white and i worked exactly there on Sutphin at 109 for a year, never had a problem. I used to park on 109, saw the same neighbors tending to thier gardens, said hello to some.....went around and got lunch... felt fine to me. yes, it is predominalty black, but I felt fin, no big deal.

that was back in 1990-1991......has it changed that much?

It’s not as bad as it used to be, but I wouldn’t recommend they move exactly there either. Too close to Jamaica Center (IMO)
