Someone on another thread mentioned that they do the theater "lotto" to see plays -- I assume you don't know which play you will see beforehand?

How does this work? What are the pros and cons?

Thanks for any info

Here goes:

Not every B'way show does this. You have to find out which one beforehand and see what their "rules" are. You can find out which ones at www.ilovenytheater.com

Oh, and they're actually called "rush tickets" not lotto.

Here are the basic rules:

2 1/2 hours before curtain, you go to the theater of the show you want to see. You either line up or walk up and put your name on a slip/card that the guy gives you and the guy will put it in a drum.

2 hours before curtain, he will twirl the drum and pick out slips/cards and call out the names.

You must have photo ID and show your cash (tix are $25 - $26.50 each).

You can buy up to 2 tickets.

Make sure to check out the show you want before heading over there. Not all the shows do it.

Pros? You're getting $130 tickets for $25

Cons? It's all orchestra seating but sometimes you'll get seats all the way on the side and can't see that well.

Wow, thank you! Pretty intriguing. There are quite a few plays I'd like to see right now, but it would kill my budget to see more than a couple.

I checked out some of the plays, and they seem to all say under "Rush Information" To Be Announced.

Any other tips on this?

I remember as a kid going with my mother to the "low price ticket booth " which had tix for many shows. Does that still exist? I know we'd be buying matinee tix, but low price.

Yes, the TKTS booths do still exist, and proceeds benefit the Theatre Development Fund.

Forget TKTS.... you'll be on the line for an hour at the very least and may not even be able to get tickets.

Here, go to these sites for some GREAT B'way discounts.

www.broadwaybox.com
www.playbill.com
www.theatermania.com

I mainly use Broadway Box -- I print out the coupon and go to the box office with it. I've gotten amazing seats on sold out shows for 40-50% off.

TKTS booth is great. 1/2 price for the same day.

It's great IF they have the tickets you want. However, who wants to stand on line for an hour or more only to find out they don't have your tickets or that they do have tickets but the seats are horrible?

I think it works best for 'older' shows that aren't sold out quickly. I got great seats for a Phantom matinee last fall.

You also have to have backups. I printouts of seating arrangements for several shows that day so I was bound to get something I liked.

And I only waited on line for 20 minutes.

They don't mess around about the ID. I got seats for Avenue Q that way a few years ago, but another party didn't because the guy whose name they drew was at another theater trying to get tickets there. His WIFE was in the group, but because it wasn't her name they drew, they wouldn't give her the tickets. You have to be there when your name is drawn.
