I currently live in Indiana and am thinking about moving to NY or California. I would like to find out some information about NY:

I heard there are many unfriendly people in NY, Is this true?
Is it easy to find job there?
Are apartments cheap, expensive there? I am thinking about renting onee maybe $600 a month. Will I be able to find a decent one for this amount?
What are some stores, attractions, or anything else interesting that comes to NY?
And, in your opinion, is moving to NY a good choice? (I'm a college student, so i'm looking for colleges there?

Thanks, I appreciate your answers!!!

Is it easy to find job there? No, mostly. UI is still nearl 10%. What do you do?

Everything here is an attraction!

Depends. What is your monthly income? How are you paying for college and living expenses? What kind of job are you looking for? What will your major be?

Thanks, I appreciate your answers!!!
Need more info.

Currently, I don't have a job. But I plan on visiting there a few months before I move and try to get a job there. I have grants and student loans, thats how i'm paying for college and im majoring in English maybe minoring in journalism or communications. I'm looking for a different college because where i'm at now, they dont have journalism as part of their program.

People in NYC are quite friendly. You can't rent an apt. for $600 in NYC. But you could probably rent a room or share an apt. for $600 a month in some areas of the city.

Keep in mind that some college students have a hard time finding housing in NYC. Campus housing, if any depending on where you go, is limited. For off-campus housing it's very expensive in Manhattan and most landlords are strict about renting to students. You will have to make 40x the rent in annual income or have parents/guarantors that make 80x the rent in annual income- sometimes the guarantors have to be from the tri-state area. You may be able to get the college to help you find roommates.

There are lots of good colleges. What's your major?

That would definitely be your first step in the right direction! By all means, job first, move second.

And if you'll pardon a comment that could possibly get me accused of bias (to which I admit), when apartment hunting, remember that in the city with the greatest transportation network in the United States, it is NOT necessary to live in Manhattan. We've got four other boroughs around here, with lots more options!

I don't know- you have to believe Manhattan gets absolutely flooded with college graduate English/communication majors looking for jobs in PR and marketing firms- there are a lot of those jobs but an endless supply of college graduates with those majors every May. If you come here, you're in best shape if you have a connection at a firm.

I would look at cities with lower cost-of-living and lower unemployment- Washington is in good shape given govt stimulus, Minneapolis (for reasons I do not know), Austin - unemployment are all 7.3% and below here and inexpensive to live. Austin and DC are tremendous cities to be young in also.
