Hello, I am looking for a place where I can do work on my computer in silence around lower Manhattan. I do not belong to any of the private libraries such as NYU and I am not a fan of doing work in coffee shops. I'm looking for any clean, quiet places with wifi to do work.

I've been to a few of the public libraries in midtown, but there have been a lot of weird people. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for places that are great for getting work done.

Thanks!

You can wrangle use of the Columbia U. library for only $55 per month, I’m told, if you cant find material you want in the public libraries. You get a referral from the city librarian to go there and “read” the material unavailable at the public library. I’ve never tried it but heard that it’s a good deal. No , its not downtown, but subway ride for a good quiet place is worth it, isn't it?

Tried and true is the Writers Room in the E. Village, which isn’t as cheap—about $100 per month last I heard—but is open 24/7. And there may be a waiting list to use it. Also there’s the NY Society Library on the Upper East side, which I writer I know uses. It’s pretty cheap at less than $200 per year. But its hours are regular 9 to 5 (or thereabouts)
