Is west farms nowdays a nice area? Used to be pretty bad.
The area of west farms that leads up to the strightaway to thr entrance of the bronx zoo is nice however the surronding areas is not. East of west farms is gritty and dark and west of west farms is the trmont section and we all know about that. At least belmont is not to far.
West Farms is still not the best, however there is alot of new middle income housing that has been built in the area, all 2 and 3 family suburban style residential homes with parking and backyards. A major improvement, but still the area has a ways to go. They also have a new shopping plaza that has a 24 hour humongous Pathmark (which is great), IHOP, dry cleaners, Pet shop, and more.
But really the issue with this thread is that this district is bucking the national trend and has a decreasing poverty rate from 2000. We have yet to account for that major fact. And for the record, this district is seen as the "South Bronx" when the reality is it is not the geographic South Bronx, but includes parts of the geographical South and Central part of the borough up to Fordham (the border of the Northern part of the borough IMO).

There are many dangerous streets in the Bronx, such as West Farms Road. But our Mayor, Bloomberg, wants to speak on our behalf as if we dont have a voice. We, who put our trust in him. He claims he has done a lot for us. And he has added many parks and has made certain streets better. However, all these additions have been made in Manhatten and other rich neighborhoods. And excuse our lack of better words but, "white neighborhoods." We need a better Bronx. WE NEED CHANGE. We need a better image for our children and generations to come. No wonder the country is broke.Wasn't the highest tax % something on the order of 55% or 60% back in the 1950's and early 1960's ?
So much for the theory of trickle down economics, where letting rich people keep as much money as possible supposedly benefits everyone because of their generosity when they are taxed less .

no, the tax has averaged somewhat close to 20% since world war II. The highest tax bracket was much higher back then but it didn't kick in until a very high level of income, something like close to $1 million in today's money. So the government took 60% (or more) of every dollar you earned past $1 million compared to about 35% today.

It's simpler than it sounds. It's the average amount all the people who file taxes pay in income tax each year. It's an average not a median, so it's skewed if there are some very rich people, like NY's 14th district.
So, let's say a place has 10 people who file for taxes. 9 pay $1000 in taxes, 1 pay in $200000. The total amount paid is $200,000*1 + $1000*9 = $209,000. The average tax liability per return is $209,000/10 = $20,900, much higher than what most people filed ($1000).
