Help!! I want to move to New York (look in Williamsburg, Carroll Garden, E. Williamsburg etc.) so that I can seek career growth/exposure in the city. I am a hair dresser and want to grow and learn more from the best. I am 29 and am self employed currently w/a business in DC. If I move I will have smal small salary at salon as I grow clientele-tips of course add alot on to total. So I would have no salary guarentee... what I do have...

1. zero credit card (or any other) debt
2. credit score of 780
3. self employed income in DC of about 1200 after taxes a month ( I will cont. to freelance in DC)
4. 11,ooo.oo in savings after paying first mo. and sec. deposit.

Do you think landlords would even consider me with out high salary to show? A gaurantor is NOT an option. Thanks so much! -J

I do not think that a landlord would approve you. However, if you were interested in having roommates, I'm sure you could piggyback on someone's lease and rent a room.

I think in the areas of Brooklyn you are looking at, you might be able to find a landlord of a small building who would consider you. Something like a townhouse or above a store, privately owned where there are only 2 or 3 apartments. The bigger buildings (the ones with management companies) probably wouldn't take you. But a smaller landlord may just do a credit check and ask for a bank statement.

riverdog's post is correct. big rental company = no go, but individual landlort might be up for it, especially if you can pay a substantial amount up front. my only advice to you is to be careful with those neighborhoods, bro. north/northeast brooklyn is a tough joint. true williamsburg is probably out of your price range. e. williamsburg = bushwick. and, further east...well, let's just say that you run a considerable risk of winding-up a statistic in the daily news.
