I just moved here Friday from Seattle. We sold our car before coming out here, so all shopping will be done on foot or delivery. Would love all advice for the best way to do grocery shopping (efficiently both time and cost-wise and from good quality places). I am not opposed to taking the train into places like Union Square to go to Trader Joes and Whole Foods, but it doesn't seem you can easily get one of those shopping carts on and off the the train--so trips like that seem to have to be for smaller amounts or will require my husband to help me carry everything? Where are the best places (either/and online or within walking distance) for general shopping--would love advice for everything from specialty items to your basic necessities like TP and laundry soap.
Welcome! When I do the grocery shopping for my mom who lives in Williamsburg (I used to live with her before moving to Bushwick) I usually go to a smaller supermarket called Compare. It's closer to mom's and they usually have most of the groceries she needs. When I lived with her and had more time I would go to the larger Key Food and/or Associated. They deliver, I believe if you spend $50 or more. I'm not picky about groceries or into all that whole food expensive stuff and I'm too lazy to travel beyond the neighborhood just to save a few dollars so I just stick to the closest stores so I can get it over with (usually weekends) because I hate grocery shopping!
I moved out of the neighborhood a few years ago but found the shopping situation severely lacking when I was living there.I took the subway to Union Sq, which a lot of friends who still live there( Williamsburg) continuue to do.
There are grocery stores closer than Union Square. Lug 50 lbs of groceries back to Williamsburg on the L train once and I guarantee it'll be the last time you do it.
You just sold your car recently...you're going to find yourself going through some teething so to speak, learning how to live without one. It was tough for a couple months for me learning how to live a car-free lifestyle.
theres a very large supermarket on South 1 and Havermeyer (C-town I think) There is also a Khims market (smaller/organic) on bedford near South 1, and also another at N11th and driggs. between those three places you can get just about everything. Fresh Direct is also a great option for delivery.
Thanks again all. I actually ADORE not having a car, no getting use to necessary. I did find C-Town which is pretty close by and decent prices; Khims is ridiculously expensive (can find same stuff cheaper elsewhere). I did go to Trader Joes on Union Square, which was a nightmare in and of itself (the amount of people in there on a weekday). The cashier told me 10-11 am is the best time, so I might give it one more try. The PP who said lugging 50 lbs on the L train was sort of right, only because I had one extra bag from previous shopping...it would be pretty quick and convenient for a trip with less items--2 bags are doable though as long as you time it right. Saw Whole Foods there as well, which contrary to popular belief can be pretty reasonable, especially for on their own brand items. Also discovered the daily farmer's market there for produce (got some delicious artisan bread and a garlic rosemary jelly that is to die for). Oh, there is another grocery store on 6th just past Bedford (have only walked by it so don't know how it is yet).
