My husband will be working in the Financial District. As of yet I don't know if my company will let me transfer, so we may be living off of one income for a while. Our budget will be around $3,000 per month. We'd like a 2 br, safe area, walkable downtown with shops and restaurants, safe, good schools, and need parking for one car. We are open to anywhere so long as my husband's commute is under an hour door-to-door. Any suggestions? I've received the below from friends so far, but I don't know if we could afford them, or if they are kid friendly (we'd like kid friendly but not boring---we're in our early 30's).

1. Park Slope
2. Forrest Hills
3. Bayside
4. Chelsea
5. Lower East Side

Any suggestions on the best place for us?
