alrite !! - I moved to this NYC from Charlotte. I just moved into a sharing arrangement with a dude - who is renting a 2 bedroom. He took a copy of my
1. Passport
2. Social Security Card
3. Visa Papers

The problem is that he has not given me any document in return for the same. NO Lease, NO RECEIPT, NO Proof that - He has a copy of my documents.

I am particularly paranoid because he has a copy of my SSN and my signature (from my passport).

I am very concerned about the ID theft thing - though I must confess that - because I am new to this country - I don't know much about it. Am I being unnecessarily paranoid?

Well. most landlords would require the same. Did he promise a lease or is this just month to month? Sorta. If you can prove you'ved lived there for more than 30 days then he would have to formally evict you through LL/tenant court. No lease needed. Expensive and time consuming. 2 months at least.

I didn't know you needed a passport and visa papers to move from Charlotte to NYC. who would of thought.

I wouldn't worry. That's how it works when you go month to month - you usually don't sign a lease, which means the law recognizes it as a month to month living arrangement. SSN is needed for credit / background check and passport is just an official form of ID. I don't know why he'd need a copy of your visa papers though. As long as he doesn't have any of your money besides the security deposit you have nothing to worry about.
